Piedmont Electric Offers
Scholarships to High School Seniors
HILLSBOROUGH, N.C., February 3, 2009—Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation will award four $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors for continuing education to either an accredited college, university or technical school.
The student’s parents must be members of Piedmont Electric. Immediate family members of Piedmont Electric employees and members of the Board of Directors are not eligible.
Only one scholarship winner per family per year is permitted.
To apply, students must complete the application form found at www.pemc.org.
The application must be accompanied by the student’s official high school transcript listing courses taken and grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0.
Students must include one letter of reference from a teacher, school counselor, employer, youth group leader or pastor.
A short essay on the topic: “Describe your Rural Electric Cooperative and how it differs from other businesses,” must also be included, as well as a copy of the student’s college acceptance letter and/or copies of ACT or SAT.
Financial need is not a criterion for the scholarship. Applications will be judged on the following criteria:
• Scholastic Achievement: 45%
• Extracurricular Activities: 20%
• Essay Content: 35%

Applications may also be hand-delivered to any of the Piedmont’s three offices in Hillsborough, Roxboro or Caswell County.
They must be postmarked no later than March 30, or hand-delivered by 4:30 p.m. on March 31.
Applications will not be considered unless all of the required information is complete and received as specified.
Piedmont Electric, which is a Touchstone Energy Cooperative based in Hillsborough, is a nonprofit electric utility serving 30,000 consumers in parts of Alamance, Caswell, Durham, Granville, Orange and Person counties.
